Digging In Together: YEG Passport Rotary and Rotaract Eastglen Join Sinkunia for Community Garden Kickoff

On Saturday, May 17, 2025, the sun broke through the morning clouds just in time for a joyful afternoon of community service at the Bosco Foundation grounds in northeast Edmonton. Members of the YEG Passport Rotary Club teamed up with 11 enthusiastic Rotaract students from Eastglen High School to support the Sinkunia Community Development Organization in launching its 2025 Community Gardening Project.

The garden is more than a space for planting—it’s a vibrant initiative rooted in food sustainability, cross-cultural connection, and hands-on learning. And this year’s kickoff event proved exactly that.

Armed with gloves, shovels, and determination, volunteers—including club members Marilyn, Wayne, Pepe & Elsa, and Ihu—helped weed and prepare two large planting beds alongside Sinkunia staff and community members. Wayne, drawing on his landscaping background, brought both tools and expertise, setting a strong pace for the team.

A standout moment? The unexpected arrival of so many Eastglen Rotaract students, turning the day into a true multigenerational collaboration. Their energy and willingness to jump in was matched by the hospitality of Sinkunia organizers, who even treated the students to lunch.

This marks the second year of collaboration between YEG Passport Rotary and Sinkunia, reinforcing a growing partnership rooted in shared values: service, empowerment, and community.

By the end of the day, the beds were clear, the weeds were gone, and the spirit of teamwork was unmistakable. Tired but fulfilled, every volunteer left knowing they had contributed to something meaningful—not just in the garden, but in the relationships built and strengthened along the way.

Here’s to another season of growing together.
